iData × NORBIT / SUCCESSFUL FOUNDER EXIT

Hungarian engineering.
An international next chapter.

2021

iData joined the NORBIT group.

€14.5MReported transaction value for the whole company, not personal exit proceeds.
34,000+Vehicles tracked when the acquisition was announced.
4,200Customers reported in the May 2021 announcement.

Historical figures: NORBIT, 11 May 2021. These are not current customer and vehicle counts.

The agreement.

NORBIT announced the acquisition of iData. Its telematics technology and subscription services expanded the then Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) segment.

The transaction closed.

NORBIT announced completion on 30 July. The company built by iData’s founders continued within an international technology group.

THE BUYER AND ITS TECHNOLOGY

What does
NORBIT build?

Based in Trondheim, the Norwegian group develops technology for specialist markets. It combines its own product development with research and manufacturing.

About NORBIT ↗
01 / OCEANS

Below the surface.

Sonar systems, subsea monitoring and marine measurement. They reveal data in environments where ordinary cameras are not sufficient.

Oceans ↗
02 / CONNECTIVITY

Vehicles and networks.

Tolling, vehicle identification, telematics and wireless communication. iData entered the former ITS segment; the related segment is now called Connectivity.

Connectivity ↗
03 / PIR

From idea to production.

Product Innovation & Realization provides R&D and contract manufacturing. Industrial production capability sits alongside the group’s engineering expertise.

NORBIT × Toll4Europe ↗

A connection
at European scale.

The joint announcement of 29 July 2024 described a new GNSS and DSRC on-board tolling unit. It combines satellite positioning and short-range communication to support toll payments across countries.

The initial order was worth NOK 160 million. The announcement specified production in Norway and deliveries in 2025.

iData and Beta Blue: one tolling story.

Beta Blue Kft. is iData’s Hungarian subsidiary. NORBIT’s 2022 annual report lists it within the iData group. The tolling connection here refers to that group, not two independent companies.

The year of market leadership is based on the co-founder’s recollection. The public sources reviewed did not provide a comparable provider-level ranking for Hungary’s 2023 tolling market.

01

It starts with measurement.

Proprietary fuel measurement and analysis help make sense of refuelling, consumption patterns and anomalies.

02

Vizsla watches.

Rule-based analysis highlights unusual events, so customers do not need to inspect every observation themselves.

03

Parts that work together.

Tracking, measurements, reports and alerts make the same operation visible from different perspectives.

04

Entrepreneurial experience.

Lessons from co-founding and leadership now inform Y’s own developments and András’s technology connections.

At iData, sensors, software and customers’ real operations form one connected system. As a co-founder, András built entrepreneurial experience around this whole-system perspective.

Fuel control: almost good enough is not enough.

A real operational problem demands a deep technical response. iData states measurement accuracy above 99% relative to tank size for its own solution. This is not a general error bound for consumption estimates: calibration, interpretation and operating conditions work together.

Not just another report. A way to understand operations.

The idea behind Vizsla is to bring important anomalies to people’s attention. Rules, reports and alerts built on tracking and measurement data create value across the system. Different customer needs can share a technical foundation instead of requiring separate developments.

Experience that leads into Y.

In 2015, András received the Young Leader of the Year award as iData’s co-founder and strategic director. The 2021 NORBIT acquisition was a successful founder exit. iData is not a Y-owned project or current holding: the connection is through engineering and company-building experience.
